No whiskey list would be complete without Wild Turkey. I can remember as a young naive lad, hearing my father order whiskey 7, with Wild Turkey. For decades WT was considered a biker’s bourbon, for the rough and tough. A palate that had cinnamon spice for days and always at 101 proof. Those days are far in the rear view mirror. WT is a staple in my bar with a dozen different expressions and my number one recommendation to someone wanting bourbon that stands up well to a cocktail.

This particular expression is a Japanese only release. In the 60s and 70s bourbon struggled. Many distilleries closed and clear spirits nearly destroyed the bourbon scene altogether. But the one customer base that kept coming back was the Asian market, specifically Japan. They love aged whiskey and Kentucky had a lot of it. Kentucky never forgot and will regularly produce limited editions only to be sold in those parts of the world. The 12 year WT 101 is one of these bottles only sold in Japan and makes me jealous of Asians.

It’s clear why I put this one on our list; because it’s a bottle we can’t get in our local stores and an expression so many long for in the whiskey world.
